Great Expectations

What I like most about Great Expectations is that it's not what I expected it to be. The story line is nothing what I was thinking. A few months before school started, I found Great Expectations and saw that it was by Charles Dickens I though it would be some stupid thing about old times and being a good person or something being expected by a person who wants to prove everyone else wrong, or something along those lines. I brushed it away, and I judged the book by its cover. As we read farther into the story, I realized I should have given it a chance. I've found it to be better than I thought, and the more we read it I find myself wanting to read more than what we're supposed to; then realize I don't fully understand the given chapter and think it ridiculous to read more. When we discuss it in class, I start to notice that Charles Dickens is kind of sending hidden messages: don't lie, look for the good in people, respect your elders no matter how disrespectful they are to you, follow your heart and not other's judgments- don't change how you feel to impress someone, and more.
What I like about the book is the mystery. After almost every chapter Dickens leaves a cliffhanger- like when Mrs. Joe was hit in the head. I also like that there's a little mystery to every character, and it's always something different. For example, Miss Havisham and her past- we're all dying to know about what happened on her wedding day. Or the man at the Three Jolly Bargemen; how did he get the file and when do we see him again? Is he the one who hit Mrs. Joe? There's a lot of questions that Dickens leaves unanswered. As the story goes on, more questions arise as others are answered- but at least for me, it's the new ones that keep you reading.
